The Thought Fox by Ted Hughes is considered one of his finest early works. It’s set at midnight when the poet looks out of a window at a dark, snowy forest. The night is a metaphor for Hughes’ imagination in whose depths an idea mysteriously stirs. Slowly, he teases out the idea in the form of a fox. First, ‘a fox’s nose’, then ‘two eyes’, then ‘neat prints in the snow’, and finally, ‘with a sudden sharp hot stink’ the woodland creature ‘enters the dark hole of the head.’
