Then & Now Brentford, Tempus, 2006
This is one of several books of historic images assembled by the Hammonds. The sequence of pictures provides a tour around Brentford and full descriptions of each location are included. The “then and now” format uses Peter Hammond’s modern views for comparison with those in the old photographs and, though some images are quite small, the quality of the reproduction is very clear.
Many of the photographs are from the Local Studies Collection at Chiswick Library, which Carolyn Hammond cared for until her retirement. They have also drawn upon other public collections and some personal ones such as Peter Downes’ very large postcard collection. The Hammonds acknowledge the work of two photographers in particular, Fred Turner, Brentford’s first public librarian, and R F Holman, a Middlesex County Council, then Hounslow Council, planning officer, who conscientiously photographed areas due for redevelopment after the Second World War.
